About us

Strive offers dance classes with a difference. We believe everyone should be able to dance, regardless of age, gender or ability. We want our students to reach for the stars and strive for their goals, whatever they may be.
We offer classes in Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Hamilton and Otorohanga in a variety of styles including acro, jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, musical theatre, contemporary, flexibility and contortion.

Our programme

ACRO DANCE

For students aged 4 and up

Acro dance is a mix between gymnastics and dancing and classes have a focus on strength, flexibility, tricks and learning dances to music.  These classes are for students of any ability and levels
will be based first on skill and second on age.

We currently offer levels 1-6 in Acrobatic arts.

COMPETITION AND PERFORMANCE TEAM

For the eager dancer aged 5 and up

Interested in taking your dancing to the next level?  Keen to compete and perform at local events and around the Waikato and surrounding regions as part of a group, trio, duet or as a soloist?  The Strive Competition and Performance team might be the right fit for you!  Auditions held annually in term 4 for the following year's team.

How to join:

We hold open auditions to any students wishing for a chance to be part of the fun every year in term 4 and sometimes throughout the year as well.  Being a part of a Strive competition team. is like being a part of a big family.  We offer a positive environment for students to grow and plenty of opportunities to perform and compete at events.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Offered to anyone (not only current Strive students) aged 3 to adults

Whether it be choreography for a competition or performance, wanting to narrow down on the technical aspects of your dancing or getting some extra help for the things you've been learning in dance class, we can help you!  Spaces are limited and priority is given to current Strive Competition Team students.

WEDDING CHOREOGRAPHY

Looking to do something more than your typical 30 second side step for your special day? We can help you Choreograph a Dance and then teach you it to make it so much more memorable. Contact us to find out more!

What you need to know

  • Dance classes are offered for students aged 2 years all the way up to adults!
  • Strive has classes for all abilities. Classes are based on both ability and age. Contact us to find out which class would best suit you or your child.
  • Class times vary from 30 to 90 minutes, mostly governed by class level and age.  Lengths of classes are shown in the description of each class on our website.
  • Every class is open to both boys and girls. The numbers of each vary class to class.
  • You can trial any class when joining (only one trial session per dance style). Some classes will also require a one-on-one private lesson with the teacher upon joining.  These are $30 for 30 minutes and will asses the student and catch them up on what the class has been learning.
  • Enrolments are done via email.
  • At Strive we understand how expensive after school activities can cost so we don't have compulsory uniforms.  Strive clothing is however available for purchase. A uniform is required for students in the competition and performance team and for students representing Strive at events.
  • All students should bring a named water bottle to class. If students are doing multiple classes in one day they are welcome to bring a small snack.  NO cellphones to be used during class unless permission is granted by teacher for filming.

WHAT TO WEAR

Acro: tight/fitting clothing (e.g. a leotard and bike shorts, leggings, crop top) must be worn for safety (so clothing doesn't catch when the teacher is spotting skills or cover the eyes when the student is upside down) and so the teacher can see the different shapes of the body during skills in order to correct the student.  All jewellery (except stud earrings) should be removed.

Contemporary/lyrical: any comfortable clothing that is suitable to dance in may be worn (e.g. no skirts).  Leggings are recommended for as lyrical and contemporary consist of a lot of floor work.  “Toe undies” are helpful but are not essential.  All jewellery (except stud earrings) should be removed.

Jazz: any comfortable clothing that is suitable to dance in may be worn (e.g. no skirts).  Jazz shoes are recommended but not essential (unless competing a jazz solo then they are required).  All jewellery (except stud earrings) should be removed.

Performance/Competition Team: Strive uniform as instructed by teacher at the beginning of the year.  Shoe requirements also specified at the beginning of the dance year.  All jewellery (except stud earrings) should be removed.
