Founded in 1944 by Tonga Mahuta, a son of the third Māori King, Mahuta, Taniwharau Rugby League Club was established in response to racial discrimination, creating a space where Māori players could participate and thrive in rugby league. Over the decades, the club has become a symbol of resilience and community spirit in Huntly and beyond.
Taniwharau caters to players of all ages, from juniors (5 years and up) to adults, including both men’s and women’s teams. The club emphasises inclusivity, cultural pride, and personal development through sport.
