Taupō BMX Club is all about having fun on bikes.
We are located at Crown Park, Taupō. Our track is built on land leased from Taupō District Council.
Our club caters for all ages and abilities, from your 2 year old strider through to our elite level riders. We have coaching programmes for all our riders, split into three groups - Sprokets and beginnners, intermediate, and senior/experienced riders. Not only do these programmes teach our riders the skills needed to compete nationally and internationally, but also teaches confidence and risk-management, with an emphasis on fun, friendship, and comradery.
We work closely with local schools and Kids Bike Taupō, getting children on bikes, having fun, and learning new skills at our track. We host several BMX events throughout the year that are open to all riders nationwide to participate and compete in BMX racing. Most recently we hosted a very successful BMXNZ North Island Titles in 2022, hosting over 500 riders from around New Zealand.
Club Nights are on Wednesday evenings.
Registration for Club Night is from 5.15pm to 5.50pm, racing starts at 6.00pm.
Your first 3 club days/nights are free. After which, you will need to join our club. Club Nights for all riders is $4 per night.
There are three types of Club Nights:
If Club Champs week is cancelled due to weather or other circumstances, Club Champs will be held on the third Wednesday of the month.
We rely heavily on volunteers to help at Club Nights. Each Club Night we need people in the Points Hut, Call-up/Staging, Gate Starter, Flag Person, a First Aider, and helpers in the shop or on the BBQ. Please let the people in the Points Hut know if you are able to help.
We have a number of race bikes and helmets to hire for $5 per night, as well as a selection of gloves.
Fun nights are just that – FUN! There will be a range of different fun activities organised, including pump laps, backwards laps, various challenges, etc. Riders will be mixed in different motos - ages, genders, friends, bike brands, etc.
On the competitive Fun Nights (third Wednesday of each month), riders will be put into class and/or age-group motos and will be racing to practice for away and major meets.
Riders attending Fun Nights will gain points towards their Rider Award. Riders must ride all five motos to achieve their full 10 points. Points are accumulated throughout the season. Riders are awarded the Rider Award for the number of points they achieve:
Club Champs will be the major competition that will run throughout the year. This series is for all Club/Challenge licenced riders. Club Champs riders must have a transponder. Riders are split into three grades based on ability and track times recorded in Sqorz.
There will be seven rounds, a rider’s three best rounds count towards the end of season “champions” for each grade. A rider can do as many rounds as they want, however only the three best count. You must ride at least three rounds to qualify. Each rider may race five motos (races) per Club Champs Night and are awarded points for their placings. Trophies are awarded to the top three riders for each grade. Riders can change categories, but they will not be able to take their points with them.
To ride on our track you will need the following equipment:
A bike - preferably a race BMX bike, but any "off-road" capable bike will do to start with, eg strider bike, kids bike, freestyle BMX, dirt jumper, mountain bike. Once you start riding on the track, you will want to ride a race BMX. At trainings and Club Nights, we have a large number of race BMX's available for hire.
A full-faced helmet (we have these available to hire)
A long-sleeved shirt/jersey
Long pants
Covered shoes
A pair of full-finger gloves (we have some available to use)
