Taupo Mountain Bike Club

About us

The Taupo Mountain Bike Club runs frequent events in Craters Mountain Bike Park. The events are open to everyone and are always well managed and good fun. Entry fees are low, and thanks to our great local sponsors the events are always good value.

Our Mission

Promote, facilitate, encourage and develop mountain biking in the Taupo region.

Our Vision

For Taupo to be our and New Zealand’s preferred all-season cross-country mountain bike destination.

Our Goals

The Clubs long term goals are defined in our constitution and include:

  1. To promote and grow the sport of mountain biking in the Taupo District alongside our key partners and stakeholders;

  2. To develop mountain bike riders through education, training and coaching, with a particular focus on our youth;

  3. To work with our partners to: plan, construct and maintain all-season cross-country mountain biking trails and associated facilities in the Taupo District, catering for all rider abilities from novice to expert; and

  4. To run and promote mountain biking events that range from social rides to competitive cross-country races.

Our programme

Taupo Mountain Bike Club Junior Development Squad

Where young riders embark on an exhilarating journey of growth and achievement. With two specialized squads, one dedicated to cross-country (XC) and the other to enduro, our squad season, spanning from October to April, is all about nurturing young talents.

Our riders benefit from the best in the business - professional coaching that hones their skills and takes them to the next level. But it doesn't stop there; our dedicated volunteers and junior coaches are also a vital part of the squad, learning and growing alongside our talented riders.

Success stories abound within our program, and the proof is in our alumni. Current under 23 XCO world champion, Sammie Maxwell, is a shining example of what our program can achieve. Join us on this incredible journey, where friendship, skill, and achievement ride hand in hand. Welcome to the Taupo Mountain Bike Club Junior Development Squad.

E Bike Social Rides

This group provides for e-bike riders to join others on easy (Grade 1 - 2) rides on Thursdays and moderate (Grade 2 - 3) mountainbike rides on Tuesdays. All rides have a strong social component where visiting a cafe along the way is encouraged. 'Away rides' are arranged usually every couple of months. This group is not for competitive riders and is supportive of beginner riders. We recommend that all riders begin with the Thursday rides before progressing to the harder Tuesday rides if they so desire. Visitor riders who want to try before joining are welcome.

What you need to know

At present you can join the Taupo MTB Club through Bike Taupo as they operate the permit to the Wairakei Forest. Follow this link and find information about the HivePass App to join the Taupo MTB Club – we receive a small portion of the Bike Taupo permit fee. This is our main source of income and enables the Club to provide our members with social and competitive events, organised Club trips and skills sessions.
