About us

Waikato Dragonboating and Waka Ama Association Incorporated is actively involved in either Dragonboating and/or Waka Ama. Our purpose is to support people to participate, compete and excel in the sports of Dragonboating and/or Waka Ama.

Our programme

The Waikato Dragon Boating and Waka Ama Association is the Regional Sports Organisation  or RSO for the Waikato/Taranaki region.  The Association is the main line of communication between teams and the New Zealand Dragon Boat Association (NZDBA).

The Association is also responsible for managing events, regattas and collective assets (dragon boats) which are for use of its affiliated teams.

It also implements the New Zealand Dragon Boat Association (NZDBA) procedures for sweep accreditation and collects paddler information for sanctioned events.

How to book a Waka/ Dragon Boat for training

Please be aware that this is your Clubs responsibility to ensure the following procedure is followed in order to schedule in your training spot:

All Clubs must ensure your members have paid the WDBWA Associations current membership fee prior to using the Associations equipment. New members are encouraged to try before committing to the Sport. In this case Clubs can allow 3 free weeks before membership is required. Clubs are to email the Secretary to request time slots for your clubs/teams. Please check the calendar for current bookings and try to be accommodating. Therefore you must email the Association Secretary with these details:

  • Club/Team Name.
  • Day and preferred time slots.
  • Paddlers Names.

Each team is responsible for the management of the waka/dboat being used. If you damage the vessels please email the Secretary, who will advise the Equipment Manager. Please be available to help with repairs if required. Please notify our Equipment Manager if any of the equipment is unsafe or needs repairing/replaced.

The Club using the waka/dboat is responsible for the safety of your own crew. Personal life jackets must be worn by individuals and each waka/dboat must be checked prior to using. Bailers must be on board before leaving shore.

Please remember the safety first rule: If you feel unsafe in certain conditions, then do not go out. No life jacket means no paddle.
